Pirogoff, Nikolai Ivanovich (1810–1881), Russian surgeon. Pirogoff is regarded as the greatest Russian surgeon and as one of the founders of modern surgery. He headed the department of surgery and the surgical clinic at a hospital in St. Petersburg. He also served as a professor of pathological anatomy and for a time as an army field surgeon. He introduced his procedure for the amputation of the foot in 1854.
